Spencer is writing and publishing because, having spent nearly all of a lifetime here on Earth and with not much of it left, he hopes he might have accumulated a small stock of wisdom. Even if not much use to anyone including himself, Spencer hopes his writings might at least make some good arguments, show some literary merit, and give food for thought.
Spencer finds that the older he gets, the more he is aware of the vastness of his ignorance and the great difficulty of getting anything right — neither of which means he, or others, should stop trying to gain wisdom and get things right.
